Sydney Sweeney Causes a Stir With Creepy New Reddit Movie Project

Syndey Sweeney is about to bring a deeply strange Reddit story to life. Back in 2021, an English teacher named Joe Cote wrote a short story and put it on Reddit. Now that piece of internet fiction will become a major motion picture starring Sweeney in the primary role. The story’s Reddit title was “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family,” and was a story about exactly that. A young adult woman pretends to be a grown version of a child who went missing ten years prior.
Despite the viral nature of the story, Cote invented it. It is not based on any kind of truth.
The script is being written by Oscar-winner Eric Roth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As with the source material, the in-development movie promises what THR calls “Gone Girl-worthy twists and turns.” Roth didn’t write the movie version of Gone Girl (that was Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the novel) but he has written a variety of other massive films you may have heard of including Forest Gump, Munich, Mank, A Star is Born. He also co-wrote 2021’s Dune: Part One, which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Now that Roth and Sweeney are attached to the Reddit “missing girl” movie, it seems only a matter of time before the film finds a director. No official release date is set, but when the movie eventually happens, it could be Sweeney’s weirdest flick yet.
